General Chemistry

Calling all budding chemists...

Week 1 Resources/ Assets

Updated August 27, 2018
This is your landing page for announcements and current news for your chemistry class. Please check this page often.

Despite what you have been told, chemistry is a fascinating subject; it drives everything that goes on around you. It's a safe assertion that if you understand chemistry well, you understand how the rest of the world works. A good knowledge of chemistry can impact decisions you make regarding the fuel you select for your car, the type of shampoo or soaps that are best for your skin type, the best choice for a leavening agent for your baked goods, or even how long to brown the flour when you make biscuit gravy... chemistry is everywhere. Congratulations are in order for those of you who have enrolled in my class, as your life is about to get more difficult, but better! The best way to succeed in this class is to be patient and prepared.

So, wonderful chemistry students... please make sure you do the following by - or later in the day of:
Tuesday's class
  1. Read the Course Overview page, and print out and read the syllabus.
  2. Print out the Week-at-a-Glance for Trimester 1 and place in your notebook, or your bulletin board at home.
  3. Purchase a copy of the textbook, along with an inexpensive scientific calculator (Canon or Texas Instruments is fine). Make sure you bring this calculator to every class.
  4. Please introduce yourself to the class by posting in the Discussion board (below).
  5. Watch the Crash Course Lab Techniques & Safety video before Wednesday; although many of the things that Hank talks about are not applicable to our laboratory - they will be to your college chemistry class. You need to know many of the techniques and safety protocols he covers.
  6. Print out Chapter 1 Worksheets, place in your notebook and start working on these.
