Week 21 Resources/ Assets

Updated February 14, 2019
Please make sure you READ everything on this page or you will miss important details. I will archive past weeks Announcements pages for a limited time only under the Trimester 1 and 2 tabs, if you need to go back to a particular weeks information for any reason.

Week 20 in Review

This past Tuesday, you all performed the Calorimetry Lab in groups. Recollect that for this particular lab, I would like you to write a scientific paper in APA format, and in the IMRAD style, having the following sections:
  • Introduction - provides the theoretical basis for your investigation, along with a hypothesis, and summary of what you did.
  • Methods - provides the materials used, and the protocol. Do not include any results in this section - state only what you did and state it in a way that anyone reading your protocol could replicate your results.
  • Results - include visuals, such as data tables, graphs, calculations - along with written verbiage of these elements.
  • Discussion - here you present an interpretation and evaluation of your results; then draw inferences and conclusions from them.
For your review, I have linked my own APA write-up in progress at the right, so you may get an idea as to how to write your Title Page, and Methods Section. You may copy and paste my data table into your own paper, but please make sure you give me some attribution (on Title Page in the Author's Note, and ultimately in your Citations section). I do not request attribution because I am on a power trip - but rather so that you do not commit plagiarism (colleges really look down on this). I also linked a blank template you can use when you start  your own paper, that is already formatted, and provides tips for success.
Remember I told you all that I would mercifully hold your hands through this writing process, so that you can author a paper you will be proud of! You will turn in individual sections (about one per week), that I will issue feedback on, but NOT post a grade. From my feedback, you can then make the edits and changes, and turn in the entire manuscript. Here are the due dates for these individual constituents:
  • Tuesday, February 26th - Methods and Results (Data) Section
  • Tuesday, March 12th - Discussion section
  • Tuesday, March 19th - Introduction
  • Tuesday, March 26th - Complete revised paper (if you submit an Abstract, I'll give you some extra credit)
While I will be merciful with respect to IMRAD style and APA format, I will not be so with grammar. You all need to proof read your papers, or have another student/ parent do this - I will provide feedback only on mechanics - not on grammar. Please take time to look at The OWL at Purdue Online Writing Lab website for tips on writing papers in APA format.

You can expect one more paper in this format due in Trimester 3.

Upcoming Week 21

This week we will finish Chapter 11. Please come to class prepared to take notes and bring any questions from the homework with  you. I have uploaded for your enjoyment ;) screencasts lecturing on Sections 11.3 and 11.4. If you want to get a head start on these sections, please feel free to take a look at the videos.

Check-off List of Things to Do:

So that  you are properly prepared for classes next week, please make sure you do the following by:
Tuesday, February 19th:
  1. Be prepared to take the In-class Quiz #20, covering material from Chapter 11. We did not get to this quiz last week.
  2. Due in class: Calorimetry Lab Worksheet
  3. Due in class: Be prepared to take the In-class Quiz #21, covering thermochemical equations (end of Section 11.2).

Upcoming Assignments Due
Tuesday, February 26th:
  1. Test covering Chapters 10 and 11
  2. Chapter 11 Homework
  3. Typed Methods and Results sections of scientific paper, along with Title Page.

Tuesday, March 12th:
