Week 15 Resources/ Assets |
Updated January 4th, 2019
Please make sure you READ everything on this page or you will miss important details. I will archive past weeks Announcements pages for a limited time only under the Trimester 1 and 2 tabs, if you need to go back to a particular weeks information for any reason. Week 14 in ReviewOn the Tuesday before break, we finally performed Precipitation Reactions: Formation of Solids Lab. Please recollect what you did: you took solutions with dissolved ions in them - like Na+ and OH- for one, and Ca2+ and Cl- for the other - and mixed them together in what was a double-replacement reaction. In this specific reaction the Ca2+ ions bound tightly to the OH- ions, forming a solid in the solution (Ca[OH]2), and then by virtue of the solid's weight, it precipitated, or fell out of the solution to the bottom of the test tube. You should have noted that not all combinations of ions formed solids - this is what you should have documented on December 11th.
Also remember that in Analysis Question #1, you were asked to write the solid's formula name (if a solid formed, that is); and you were to answer the rest of the questions under the Analysis section of the lab. Hopefully you now understand that Na+ ions do not form a solid precipitate with any of the anions from any source; the solutions containing Na really only provide the binding anion for other cations such as Ag+, Pb2+, and Ca2+. On that last Tuesday, the class also made toffee; this was the second part of a two-part laboratory in candymaking. If you have not already done so, please print out the articles and assignments linked right, read them thoroughly, and turn in these completed labs when you return on January 8th. Upcoming Week 15 When you return from Break, we will start Chapter 9 - Stoichiometry. The chapter is broken into sections as follows:
Test due Tuesday You were all scheduled to take a test covering Chapters 7, and 8, only, due when you return on Tuesday. Since this is a closed-book, closed-note, closed-resource test, make sure your parents sign the exam as confirmation they proctored it. In addition, have them state on the Answer Sheet, that you completed your Chapter 8 Homework, so you may receive credit for it. To prepare for Tuesday's classes, please make sure you do the following by: Tuesday's class - January 8th:
