Course Description

This delightful and awesome first-year college preparatory chemistry course covers measurements and units, energy and heat, atoms and molecules, classification of matter, naming and writing chemical formulas, the periodic table, the mole concept, stoichiometry, atomic and molecular structure, molecular geometry, ionic and covalent bonding, acids and bases, solutions, the gas laws, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, and reduction/oxidation reactions. The course will include lab experiments to learn basic lab skills, practice experimental procedures, and write lab reports in APA format. In order to take this course, a student should have completed Algebra II. This course is considered a lab science.

Textbook and Materials

  1. Addison-Wesley Chemistry, Revised 5th Edition, by Antony C. Wilbraham
  2. Binder (at least a 2-inch ring capacity), along with about 20 dividers for each chapter in the text.
  3. Paper for taking notes.
  4. Scientific calculator - need not be a graphing calculator.
  5. Printer for printing out worksheets, exams, laboratories and other assignments.
  6. Internet access for watching videos, taking online quizzes, and checking peplabrat website.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • The student will correctly perform unit analysis problems (involving the metric system, unit conversions, volume, density and temperature) applying significant digits and scientific notation.
  • The student will be able to identify and explain the difference between the physical and chemical properties of matter.
  • The student will be able to balance chemical reactions by inspection; identify the mole ratio between reactants/ products; correctly solve stoichiometric problems.
  • The student will identify all of the structures of the atom, and explain each structures properties and how it was discovered.
  • The student will correctly write molecular formulas provided the names of compounds; from the molecular formulas, correctly write the chemical names for both ionic and molecular compounds.
  • The student will learn the different classifications of chemical reactions; then, identify those reaction types in chemical equations.
  • In cooking/ baking projects, apply chemical principles, such as (1) identifying physical and chemical interactions, (2) identifying reaction types, and (3) discuss states of matter, phase changes, and crystal formation (if applicable).
  • Draw Lewis structures for molecular compounds.
  • In laboratory, will learn how to write up a scientific lab report, using APA format.
